What We Do

Kenya Muslim women alliance has been the backbone of women excellence programs and initiatives with the aim of setting national and international standards towards achieving gender equality. In the global community, women have been the stars to many development roles and solutions; however women still face extreme challenges when it comes to provisions of social justice and even the mere recognition of their tremendous contributions. Through women excellence program, KEMWA works on finding solutions in various aspects including:

— Ending violence against women

While violence against girls and women is a serious violation of human rights, the coastal region of Kenya is among the most affected by dangerous norms and intense traditions that celebrates harmful and harsh treatments against women. Violence on women affects and impacts not only women themselves but also affects families, society and the country at large. There are many laws and regulations both at local and national level that has been passed on domestic violence but challenges still remains in enforcing and implementing the laws.

KEMWA has been partnering with governments, international and national organizations, civil societies and institutions in order to find ways to prevent violence against women and girls, focusing on early education, respectful relationships and working with men and boys. While prevention is still the most cost-effective and long-term way to stop violence, Kemwa provides any sort of assistance to women after experiencing violence that includes safety, protection and recovery process especially those who suffer multi forms of discrimination.

— Women Empowerment

Women make huge contributions to economies in various aspects, whether in business, on farms, as entrepreneurs or employees, or by doing unpaid care work at home, hence investing in women’s economic empowerment is viable and sets a direct path towards gender equality, poverty eradication and inclusive economic growth. However women remain disproportionally affected by poverty, discrimination and exploitation and exploitation. KEMWA works with multiple partners, our “women excellence” programmes promote women in acquiring decent jobs, influence women in community to promote self growth and development, accumulate assets and most importantly educate and advocate for women important in employments opportunities especially in instutions and public forums. KEMWA main advocacy on the empowerment “women excellence” programmes, we focus in reaching out to women most in need, by engaging from the grassroots (mashinani) focusing more on marginalized groups, domestic workers and low skilled women.

— Peace & Security

War, violent conflict, terrorism and violent extremism have differential and devastating consequences for women and girls. In the face of this, women are all over the world are leading movements for peace and to rebuild communities, and evidence provides that women participations in peace processes has contributed to longer and more resilient peace after conflict. KEMWA has provided exclusive programs, traineeships and educational platforms across Mombasa and kwale counties on how women can be empowered and supported in contributing to peaceful and secure environment: the need for peace, security and cohesion in our communities: the role of women in peace building, security enhancement, cohesion building for PCVE and psychosocial and trauma counseling of women leading to healing.

— Women in Politics & Leadership

Women in politics and leadership have long been underrepresented and restricted. Women have long been suppressed as voters as well as in leading positions, whether in elected office, the civil service, the private sector or in academics. The obstacle goes beyond to mere suppressions. There are structural barriers through discriminatory laws and institutions that are still limit women’s options: capacity gaps also subjects women to less education, contacts and resources that is necessarily needed to become effective leaders. KEMWA is always in the front in advocating for legislative reforms to ensure women have access to political spheres-as voters, candidates, elected officials and civil service members. KEMWA provides training for women in political sphere in helping building their capacities; we also offer voter and civic education and sensitization campaigns on gender equalities.
